Shadow Soldier was the first in the J.D. Wilkes trilogy, it’s a hardbound book covering the period from 1863 when he was 14 and the Union was laying siege to his hometown Vicksburg, Mississippi and covers his induction into the courier service for the Confederacy. His father, Horatio Wilkes, a successful businessman also runs the espionage efforts of the South. They are forced to flee their home when Vicksburg falls. At the end of the Civil War, J.D. is sent out to Texas to make his name and build a business, but he quickly falls into the hands of rustlers, though he is unaware they are stealing the cattle J.D. has been hired to help gather. From then on, he is part of the Western story, working as a sheriff, a cowboy on a famous cattle drive and forced to ultimately acknowledge the dirty deeds his father has taken part in to rebuild his empire in Mississippi.
